People are going into debt to have what they don’t need to show other people what they don’t want. The skill of marketing and sales is to tell us that we want their ‘stuff’.

One of the most pervasive preoccupations in our society is the all-consuming fascination with possessions. A huge amount of energy is targeted at the acquisition of as much stuff as possible. Most of the industry at the core of our commercial success in the western world exists to feed the insatiable appetites we have for the accumulation of things.

We are in perpetual adulation and admiration of those who possess as many things as possible and we call this acquisition success. The six richest people in the world own more than the 600 million poorest. The 250 richest own more than the poorest 2.5 billion and the richest 1000 people on earth own more than the 5.3 billion poorest. There are only 6.4 billion people on Earth and for hundreds of millions there is not enough for them to eat today.
